Discover the magic of cyanotypes and create prints inspired by nature in this hands-on introductory workshop. We’ll explore the history of cyanotypes, invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842, and contemporary applications of this simple yet fascinating photographic printing process.
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to mix the non-toxic cyanotype sensitizer and coat paper or fabric for printing. You’ll then expose your prints to sunlight outdoors (weather permitting) or a UV light source to produce the distinctive blue and white tones that cyanotypes are known for.
The workshop will be taught by instructor Karen Klinedinst who will demonstrate the cyanotype process and provide guidance and feedback as you develop your skills and experiment with different techniques. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a solid foundation in the cyanotype process and unique prints to take home.
Please bring any objects you’d like to print with (plants, leaves, feathers, etc). All other materials will be provided.

Meet Your Instructor
Karen Klinedinst is a visual artist using photography to explore themes of place, nature and the human impact on the environment. Using digital, analog and alternative photo processes, she creates richly layered images that combine the real with the imagined. Her work is in private and public collections including the Liriodendron Mansion in Bel Air, MD, the National Park Service, and the Fort Wayne Museum of Art in Fort Wayne, IN.
