Viburnum nudum 'Winterthur' (smooth witherod viburnum)

smooth witherod viburnum (3 gallon)

'Winterthur' is a handsome compact cultivar of possumhaw. This flowering deciduous shrub has lustrous waxy foliage and white, musky-scented flowers that appear in April. The fruits, from September to February, are very exotic in color: salmon-pink, shades of lavender to blue and purplish black. Slow growing to 6' in 10 years. The red to reddish purple fall colors are impressive. Best in full sun to part shade in moist soils.

Possumhaw is native to North America south to Florida and west to Wisconsin. The fruit is eaten by various wildlife. Deer browse the foliage. It is a larval host to spring azures and hummingbird clearwing moths.
