Thalictrum thalictroides (rue anemone)

rue anemone (quart)

Rue anemone is a delicate, spring-flowering woodland plant that is easily grown in well-drained soil in part or full shade. White or pink flowers appear in loose clusters above whorls of three-lobed leaves. Often found in the wild on wooded slopes and ridges, this showy spring ephemeral becomes dormant in summer. Note: All parts are poisonous when fresh but toxic only if eaten in large quantities.

Rue anemone is native to eastern and central U.S. It is found in open deciduous and mixed woods, typically in humus-rich soils. It emerges in early spring to take advantage of the readily available light before the leaves unfold and shade the understory. It blooms, relying on insect-pollination, sets seed, which is dispersed by ants, and then the plant goes dormant for the remainder of the growing season.
