Spigelia marilandica (Indian pink)

Indian pink (quart)

Indian pink is a native wildflower that has stunning red and yellow flowers in late spring to early summer. This erect, clump-forming perennial grows to 1–2' tall. Each wiry stem bears a terminal, one-sided spike of deep-red to scarlet tubular flowers, each ending in five yellow lobes. It is best planted in part to full shade in moist, well-drained soil. Does not compete well with aggressive plants. An excellent addition to a shady border or woodland garden. To prolong the flowering season, remove the flowers as they wither.

Indian pink is native to inland areas of the southeastern and midwestern U.S. It tends to be found in low, moist woods, ravines, or streambanks in partial or full shade. Attracts hummingbirds.
