Solidago sempervirens (seaside goldenrod)

seaside goldenrod (quart)

Seaside goldenrod is a late-season herbaceous perennial with bright yellow flowers on dark green foliage. Likes full sun. Salt spray tolerant. Grows to 2–5’. Does well in moist or sandy soils. Blooms later in the season than most of its relatives.

Seaside goldenrod is native to eastern North America and parts of the Caribbean. It is primarily a plant of the seashore, growing on sand dunes, salt marshes, and the banks of estuaries. The flowers attract many pollinators. Fall migrating monarch butterflies on the Atlantic coastal flyway find them an important food/energy source. The plant also provides nesting habitat for shorebirds like wilets, killdeer, and black skimmers.
