Solidago rugosa 'Fireworks' (wrinkleleaf goldenrod)
wrinkleleaf goldenrod (quart)
'Fireworks' is a cultivar of wrinkleleaf goldenrod that produces dense, plume-like panicles of showy yellow flowers in late summer to fall. Flowers bloom at the ends of rough, hairy, often unbranched stems clad with hairy, medium to dark green leaves. Deep pinnate veins give the leaves a rough and wrinkled appearance. Grows to 3' tall and wide. Easily grown in average, slightly acidic, medium to wet, well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerates light shade. May be grown from seed and may self-seed in the garden. This is a rhizomatous, spreading plant. Check out Solidago 'Fireworks' in our parking lot gardens where they are in full bloom by mid-September.
Wrinkleleaf goldenrod is native to North America, where it is widespread across eastern and central Canada and the U.S. It is usually found in wet to moist habitats. The nectar and pollen of the flower support many species of insects, including small bees, wasps, flies, small butterflies, skippers, and beetles. The dried seeds provide a food source for birds in fall and winter.
