Salvia lyrata 'Purple Knockout' (lyre-leaf sage)
lyre-leaf sage (quart)
'Purple Knockout' is a cultivar of lyre-leaved sage that has burgundy leaves that are deeper in color than the species. The plant is grown mainly for its foliage. It produces a delicate spike of tiny white/light lilac flowers in the spring and summer. Grows to about 18" tall and 12" wide. 'Purple Knockout' grows prolifically in average to wet soils, clay or sandy soils in full sun. It tolerates drought and humidity well.
Lyre-leaved sage is native to the U.S. from Connecticut west to Missouri and in the south from Florida west to Texas. It is found in full sun or light to medium shade, in native stands on roadsides, fields, and open woodlands. Attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
