Rhododendron periclymenoides (pinxter azalea)
pinxter azalea (1 gallon, 18")
Pinxter azalea, also known as pink azalea, is a showy, deciduous azalea found in moist woods. Plant in full sun to part shade and enjoy stunning white to pink flowers in April and May. The flowers carry a strong, sweet scent similar to petunias. This azalea will grow to 3–6' tall. Grows best in acidic soils rich in humus that retain moisture but still have some drainage. Common landscape uses are in shrub borders and as a foundation plant. Note that while the flowers are beneficial to certain wildlife, all rhododendrons contain toxic substances and should not be consumed by humans or animals. Plant is subjects to some problems caused by insects and disease.
Pinxter azalea occurs throughout the eastern U.S. It is widespread in Maryland. Pinxter prefers habitats in swamp margins, moist woods, and open areas with full to partial sunlight or high, open shade. Common pollinators are hummingbirds and butterflies. Many animals and birds use shrubs like pinxter for shelter in the forest. The roots also provide erosion control and protection for watersheds.
