'Marydel' is a semi-dwarf deciduous azalea that grows to 3–4' tall and 5-6' wide. Best grown in acidic, organically rich, humusy, moist but well-drained soils in part shade. Prefers sun-dappled or high open shade. In heavy, clay soils, consider raised beds/plantings to prevent root rot. 'Marydel' was found in the wild in Delaware near the Choptank River and the town of Marydel, and is believed to be a natural hybrid. It has deep pink buds that open into very fragrant, white flowers with a deep pink tube and pink at the margins of the petals. Use it as a specimen or massed in groups. Also effective as a foundation planting or a hedge.
Coastal azalea is native to coastal plains from New Jersey and Pennsylvania south to Geogia. Often seen growing in dense colonies in the wild, particularly in sandy soil areas. Attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and birds. Toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.
