Pycnanthemum muticum (mountain mint)

mountain mint (quart)

Clustered or short-toothed mountain mint is a clump-forming aromatic perennial that grows best in full sun but can tolerate part shade. It can reach 3' tall. Prefers moist, well-drained soils, but can tolerate clay too. Its dense flower-like cymes bloom for weeks in August and September. Less drought tolerant than most other pycnanthemums. Like other mints, it spreads through rhizomes and seeds but can be easily pulled up if it gets too aggressive. Good for woodland garden, naturalized area, perennial border, or a meadow planting.

Clustered mountain mint is native to eastern North America, where it typically grows in grassy open places, meadows, fields, low woodland areas, and occasionally in dry upland woods (but not in alpine areas as its name suggests). Flowers attract butterflies and bees.
