Polygonatum biflorum (Solomon's seal)

Solomon's seal (quart)

Smooth Solomon's seal adds a refined, vertical character to the woodland garden with its arching stems. This shade-loving perennial has small creamy bell flowers that bloom on the underside of 1–3' tall stems from April to May. The bright green leaves of summer give way to attractive yellow fall color that contrasts nicely with the blue-black round fruit hanging beneath each leaf axil. Easily grown in average, medium to wet, well-drained soil in part shade to full shade. Prefers moist, humusy soils. Slowly spreads by rhizomes to form colonies in optimal growing conditions. Solomon's seal is native to eastern and central North America. It is found in rich or rocky woods and along streambanks. Fruits attract birds. Mammals eat the roots. Attracts butterflies.
