Panicum virgatum (switchgrass)

switchgrass (quart)

Switchgrass is an upright landscape grass with lovely blue green foliage that turns yellow in fall. In late summer, airy wheat-colored flowers appear and remain attractive well into fall. Switch grass is an undemanding grass suitable to any soil type. Tough and easy to grow, this clump-forming grass reaches 4–6' tall in full sun to part shade. Tolerates clay soils. Good for massed plantings, using as a screen, meadows, naturalized areas, and water margins. Cut stems back to the ground in early spring to help keep an attractive shape.

Switchgrass is native to North America, occurring over most of the U.S. east of the Rockies. Switchgrass is a versatile and highly adaptive plant that also offers potential as a bioenergy crop. Switchgrass has a deep fibrous root system that is credited with helping to create some of the world's most productive soils in the American Midwest, where prairies once existed. Very high wildlife value: Its plentiful small seeds and tall cover provide good forage and habitat for upland game birds and songbirds. Other wildlife also use it for forage and cover. Larval host for the Delaware skipper.
