Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah' (switchgrass)

switchgrass (1 gallon)

'Shenandoah' is the brightest red switchgrass available. It colors up by June and the flowers are also red. It is also the shortest of the switchgrass cultivars and the slowest grower, perhaps due in part to its lack of chlorophyll. 'Shenandoah' can be grown in a variety of soils, but prefers sandy loam soils in full to partial sun. Drought tolerant once established, yet will tolerate wet, soggy soils for short periods. Tolerant of clay soils. Cut back in early spring to promote new flush of growth. Most effective as a specimen, in rock gardens, in masses, or as an accent in the perennial border.

Switchgrass is native to North America, occurring over most of the U.S. east of the Rockies. Switchgrass is a versatile and highly adaptive plant that also offers potential as a bioenergy crop. Switchgrass has a deep fibrous root system that is credited with helping to create some of the world's most productive soils in the American Midwest, where prairies once existed. Very high wildlife value: Its plentiful small seeds and tall cover provide good forage and habitat for upland game birds and songbirds. Other wildlife also use it for forage and cover. Larval host for the Delaware skipper.
