Panicum virgatum 'Cape Breeze' (switchgrass)

switchgrass (1 quart)

The 'Cape Breeze' cultivar of switchgrass has a shorter, denser, and more upright habit, reaching only 24–30" tall. Medium green foliage turns golden brown with airy seed heads. Good plant for shorelines and erosion control because of its deep root system. It is a great size for the home garden. Other winning traits: Salt tolerant and the deer stay away from it. It does well in full to part sun in well-drained soils. Panicums will gradually spread and form a patch about 2' wide.

Switchgrass is native to North America, occurring over most of the U.S. east of the Rockies. Switchgrass is a versatile and highly adaptive plant that also offers potential as a bioenergy crop. Switchgrass has a deep fibrous root system that is credited with helping to create some of the world's most productive soils in the American Midwest, where prairies once existed. Very high wildlife value: Its plentiful small seeds and tall cover provide good forage and habitat for upland game birds and songbirds. Other wildlife also use it for forage and cover. Larval host for the Delaware skipper.
