Pachysandra procumbens (Allegheny spurge)

Allegheny spurge (quart)

Allegheny spurge has evergreen blue-green leaves that make a beautiful native groundcover. Pachysandra spreads slowly through rhizomes to form a dense carpet. It reaches only about 12" tall. It requires an evenly moist soil and part or full shade. In the spring it sends up a fragrant white bottlebrush flower though it is held under the foliage most of the time. Drought resistant and deer resistant. A good native alternative that is more attractive than the over-used Asiatic Pachysandra terminalis.

Allegheny spurge is the only native pachysandra in North America. It is native to the southeast U.S. from West Virginia and Kentucky south to Florida. Provides early season pollen for tiny native bees and cover for ground-feeding birds, small animals, and insects.
