Opuntia humifusa (prickly pear cactus)
prickly pear cactus (1 quart)
Eastern prickly pear cactus is the only cactus native to our region. This clump-forming cactus has fleshy green pads with spines and 3–4" wide yellow flowers that burst into color in late June. The edible, juicy red or purple fruits measure from 1-1/8–2". As the fruit matures, it changes color from green to red or purple and often remains on the cactus until the following spring. This plant enjoys full sun and dry, rocky or sandy areas.
Prickly pear cactus is found in parts of the eastern U.S. It is found in sunny, hot and dry environments with well-draining, sandy soil. Attracts native bees.
