Monarda punctata (spotted beebalm)

spotted beebalm (1 gallon)

Spotted beebalm or spotted horsemint differs from other monardas that have one flower head at the top of each stem. It has stacked inflorescences with large, leafy bracts that radiate out from the stem, just below each flower head. These bracts can vary in color from light pink to white and provide ornamental interest for much longer than the actual flowers. The flowers are yellow with brown spots and visible only up close. Grows 24–30" tall. Best in dry to average, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Tolerates somewhat poor or sandy soils and some drought. Thyme-scented leaves turn yellow and defoliate late in the season, as do many beebalms. Readily self-seeds to establish a population in open soils. Excellent resistance to powdery mildew.

Spotted beebalm is native to the eastern U.S. It is found in dryish soils on prairies, sandy areas, and coastal plains. Incredibly popular with pollinators. A great plant for attracting beneficial predatory wasps to the garden to control grubs and pest caterpillars.
