Lobelia cardinalis (red cardinal flower)

red cardinal flower (quart)

Red cardinal flower is a wonderful choice for gardens that have some shade and moisture. It can tolerate conditions from full sun to full shade but must have the moisture to flourish. Under ideal conditions cardinal flower can grow to 5' tall though 2–4' would be the norm. Brilliant deep red flowers bloom from June to September, attracting birds, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Good for perennials borders, wild gardens, and near ponds and streams and rain gardens. May be shortlived but persists once planted because of volunteers. Note: Considered potentially toxic if ingested.

Red cardinal flower is native to the Americas, from southeastern Canada through eastern and southwestern U.S., Mexico, and Central America to northern Colombia. It is found in wet places, streambanks and swamps. It is primarily pollinated by the ruby-throated hummingbird because most insects find it difficult to navigate the long tubular flowers.
