Liatris spicata (purple blazing star)
purple blazing star (1 gallon)
Dense blazing star is a tall, upright, clump-forming perennial with showy flowers. Deep purple flower heads grow atop 2' stalks with narrow strap-like leaves. Blooms in summer. Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soils in full sun. Somewhat tolerant of poor soils but prefers moist, fertile ones. Give it regular watering in its first season to build strong roots. Needs to be spaced 12–15" apart to allow sun and air to help prevent diseases. Tolerant of summer heat and humidity. In the garden, its vertical form contrasts well with mounded and broad-leaf plants.
Dense blazing star is native to eastern North America, where it grows in moist prairies and sedge meadows. Considered highly rare in Maryland. Attracts pollinators and beneficial insects. Host plant for various moth species. Groundhogs, rabbits, and voles eat the plants. Considered deer resistant.
