Iris cristata (dwarf-crested iris)

dwarf-crested iris (quart)

Dwarf crested iris is a vigorous, rapidly spreading spring bloomer for the shade garden. Blooms April–May and grows to only 4–8". This iris does very well in shade and part shade and needs moist, acidic soil. Colonizes by rhizomes; will cover an area for a spectacular show. Note: Like many other irises, most parts of the plant are poisonous.

Dwarf crested iris is native to temperate regions of the U.S. It is listed as endangered in Maryland and Pennsylvania. It is found in calcareous soils, in oak woodlands, on rocky hillsides, and along streams. Attracts bees and hummingbirds.
