Ilex glabra 'Densa' (inkberry)

'Densa' is a mid-sized inkberry cultivar that reaches 3-4’ tall and wide. It grows in full sun with moist soil or shade and tolerates heat and drought. Useful as a compact foundation plant. Best planted in groupings, easy to grow. Unlike the species and some inkberry selections, 'Densa' does not lose its lower leaves, leaving a stretch of bare stems at the base. Note: All Ilex species are somewhat toxic if ingested; sensitivity varies. 

Inkberry is native to the coastal plain of eastern North America. it is most commonly found in sandy woods and the peripheries of swamps and bogs. Attracts honey bees and birds. Evergreen foliage provides protection for birds. Maryland DNR lists inkberry as deer-resistant. Inkberry holly is on the University of Maryland Extension's list of recommended native shrubs.
