Hydrangea quercifolia 'Snow Queen' (oakleaf hydrangea)

oakleaf hydrangea (3 gallon)

'Snow Queen' is an upright oakleaf hydrangea that grows 4 to 6 feet tall. Showy, long clusters of white flowers eventually fade to a light pink in summer. The deeply lobed foliage offers interesting fall color. Plant in full sun to part shade.

Oakleaf hydrangea is native to southeastern U.S. Does not occur naturally in Maryland, but with climate change, species native to our South have the potential to fare better in mid-Atlantic ecosystems of the future, according to Maryland's Extension Service. Found in woodland or woods-edge habitat. It often grows in colonies in the wild, spreading through shoots from underground stolons. Supports bumblebees and other pollinators, and some songbirds eat the seeds. Oakleaf hydrangea is on the University of Maryland Extension's list of recommended native shrubs.
