Hydrangea quercifolia 'Ruby Slippers' (dwarf oakleaf hydrangea)

oakleaf hydrangea (1 gallon)

'Ruby Slippers' is a cultivar of oakleaf hydrangea known for its compact form. It was developed at the National Arboretum. Oakleaf hydrangeas have great multi-season interest. This new cultivar is small in stature and has large flower heads that stay upright, even after heavy rains. It grows 3–4' tall and 4–5' wide. Flower heads are held upright above their leaves, making them particularly suited for use in smaller landscapes. Early summer flowers on 'Ruby Slippers' open white but quickly turn pale pink and deepen into rose. Showy autumn leaf color. Like other oakleaf hydrangeas, Ruby Slippers can be grown in full sun or light shade and are hardy in USDA zones 5 to 8. Plant 'Ruby Slippers' in an area with well-drained but moist soil. It appreciates some mulch cover to help retain soil moisture. Can be used in shrub borders or mass-planted in large areas. Note: Deer browsing can be a problem.

Oakleaf hydrangea is native to southeastern U.S. Does not occur naturally in Maryland, but with climate change, species native to our South have the potential to fare better in mid-Atlantic ecosystems of the future, according to Maryland's Extension Service. Found in woodland or woods-edge habitat. It often grows in colonies in the wild, spreading through shoots from underground stolons. Supports bumblebees and other pollinators, and some songbirds eat the seeds. Oakleaf hydrangea is on the University of Maryland Extension's list of recommended native shrubs.
