Dryopteris marginalis (eastern wood fern)

eastern wood fern (quart)

Known as the marginal wood fern or marginal shield fern, this sturdy fern is very hardy for woodland shade, native plant gardens, and rock gardens. Grows 18–24" tall and just as wide. The name derives from the fact that the spore-producing structures are found on the margins or edges of the leaflets. It does best in part shade to full shade from dry to moist soils. The leaf is a grayish-green and the frond is evergreen, leathery, and deeply cut. Its habit is a non-spreading clump.

Marginal wood fern is found in damp shady areas throughout eastern North America.
