Clethra alnifolia (summersweet)

2 Gallon

University of Maryland Extension Recommended Native Shrub

Maryland DNR Deer-Resistant Plant

Sweet pepperbush, or summersweet, grows to about 3–8' and produces beautiful, fragrant, white flowers from July to August. It thrives in swampy, wet areas and streambanks. It should be planted in areas with full sun to part shade and medium to wet soil moisture. In the full sun, make sure that it receives adequate water. Summersweets are somewhat unique among flowering shrubs because of their ability to bloom in shady locations in late Sumer when few other shrubs are in bloom.

Summersweet, also known as sweet pepperbush, is native to eastern North America. It grows in wetlands, bogs, and along woodland streams. Bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds use the flowers. Many birds and mammals eat the fruit. Attracts native bees. Host plant to several butterfly species.
