Chelone lyonii 'Hot Lips' (pink turtlehead)

pink turtlehead

'Hot Lips' is a cultivar of pink turtlehead. Its rosy purple flowers appear in August and September on red stems that can grow up to 3-4' tall. The flowers are a deeper pink than the species, and the foliage, which matures from a bronze green to a dark green, is deeper green than the species. This turtlehead likes part shade and wet to moist soil. Good for woodland gardens, pond edges, and moist border areas. Consider pinching back the plant in spring to reduce mature plant height, especially if growing plants in strongly shaded areas where they are more likely to need some support.

Pink turtlehead is native to wet woodlands in the southern Appalachian Mountains. It has escaped gardens and naturalized in other areas. Attracts bumblebees, butterflies, and other insects and hummingbirds. Blooming late in the season and for a long time, it is a good source of pollen and nectar for wildlife.
