Carya ovata (shagbark hickory)
shagbark hickory (3 gallon)
A deciduous tree known for its "shaggy" bark, the shagbark hickory can grow to 70-90 feet tall with a spread of 50-70, making it an excellent shade tree. Its preference is full sun or part shade, and grows in sandy and clay loam soils that are well-drained. Once established, it is fairly drought tolerant. This tree has nuts that are highly valuable to wildlife and hosts a number of butterflies and moths.
