Carex pensylvanica (Pennsylvania sedge)
Pennsylvania sedge (quart)
Pennsylvania sedge, sometimes referred to as Penn sedge, grows in part to full shade in areas with dry to medium soil moisture. It generally grows in loose colonies and will slowly creep via its cordlike rhizomes. Clumps grow to 8" tall. It is semi-evergreen and has narrow leaves. Insignificant flowers bloom early in the Spring, from April to June. Unlike other sedges, which prefer moist to wet soils, this is a good option for a groundcover in dry shade. Can also be used as an underplanting for shade perennials or a lawn substitute in shady areas. Deer resistant.
Pennsylvania sedge is native to North America, especially eastern Canada and the eastern United States. It is found in thickets and dry woodland areas.
