Carex appalachica (Appalachian sedge)

Appalachian sedge (quart)

Appalachian sedge is a finely textured, clump-forming species of sedge. Thrives in soils ranging from moist but well-drained to dry shade. It maintains a rather tidy appearance and has a fine texture to it. Semi-evergreen. It grows to about 12 inches tall and 8 inches wide. This sedge is a great option for a groundcover that grows in a dry shady area. Spreads slowly. Often recommended as an effective alternative for a turfgrass lawn. Deer and rabbit resistant.

Appalachian sedge is native to the eastern U.S. from Georgia and Alabama northward through New England. In Maryland, it is considered critically imperiled.
