Gain a basic understanding of plant parts, structure, and functions to represent plant life accurately in art. This class will be co-taught by Mikaela Boley, who will present the science of plants, and Kelly Sverduk, who will focus on sketching and diagraming the plant. This seasonal study will be primarily focused on the Fall flowers of the Arboretum.
Bring a packed lunch.
Materials List
- 11x14" sketchbook
- Several drawing pencils (HB, B, and 2B are adequate.)
- Kneaded eraser
- Ruler
- Your preferred medium for color samples (Basic watercolor kit or color pencils. Instructor will also have materials to share.)

Meet Your Instructors
Mikaela Boley works as Principal Agent Associate for University of Maryland Extension service in Talbot County for Home Horticulture and coordinates the county Master Gardener volunteer program since 2012. She holds a B.S in Environmental Horticulture from the University of Minnesota and a Masters in Applied Entomology from UMD- College Park. Her expertise is in Native Plants of Delmarva, Landscape Design, and Bay-wise Practices for sustainable landscapes; she enjoys sharing her love of native grasses and native plant propagation. You can also find her co-hosting the Garden Thyme Podcast with fellow University of Maryland faculty Rachel Rhodes and Emily Zobel.
Botanical artist Kelly Sverduk specializes in watercolor and is passionate about making and teaching art. With a background in both art and natural sciences, she finds the field of botanical illustration to perfectly mesh her interests. Kelly holds a B.A. in studio art from Messiah College and a certificate in botanical art from the Brookside Gardens School of Botanical Art and Illustration. She lives with her family in Greenwood, DE
