Aronia melanocarpa 'Low Scape Mound' (black chokeberry)

black chokeberry (3 gallon)

The Low Scape Mound cultivar of black chokeberry has become increasingly popular. It maintains a low profile at only 12-24" tall, but displays the beautiful spring flowers, black berries in summer, and the red to purple fall foliage characteristic of chokeberries. Plant in part shade or sun in dry, wet, or average soil. Spreads by root suckers forming colonies. Needs little attention. It does well in mass plantings and tolerates heat and drought well. Plant in full to part sun.

Black chokeberry is native to eastern North America. Found in swamps, bogs, wet thickets, moist woods, etc., on Maryland's Western Shore and in Western Maryland. Attracts many pollinating insects. Fruits feed numerous local songbirds in winter. Host plant for large alce-bordered moth and the coral hairstreak butterfly, which is generally uncommon in Maryland. Protect from deer and rabbit browse. On the University of Maryland Extension's list of recommended native shrubs.
