Aquilegia canadensis 'Corbett' (columbine)

columbine (quart)

'Corbett' is a compact cultivar of columbine with delicate, pale yellow flowers. It thrives in light shade and moist rich soils. The spring wildflower is a favorite of hummingbirds. Blooms April-May and will go dormant mid-summer but reseeds given the right conditions. This cultivar is also resistant to leaf miner, a common pest of other columbines. An excellent choice for woodland gardens.

Columbine is native to North America east of the Rockies. Its native habitat is partly shaded to shaded woodland areas with soils that are not too rich. Columbine's distinctive backward-pointing spurs contain nectar that attracts long-tongued insects and hummingbirds especially adapted for reaching the sweet secretion. Finches and buntings eat the seeds. It is a larval host to the columbine duskywing.
