Andropogon ternarius (splitbeard broomsedge)

splitbeard broomsedge (1 gallon)

Splitbeard broomsedge is a warm-season perennial grass with a clumping habit. Reaching 1.5–4' in height with a 2' spread, this grass grows best in full sun or part shade with well-drained soils. The narrow, green leaves can be purplish by fall and hold fluffy, silver seedheads.

Splitbeard broomsedge is native to the southeastern, east-central, and south-central parts of the U.S. It is considered uncommon on the Coastal Plain. It grows in pine and oak forests as well as old fields and other disturbed habitats. The seeds themselves are enjoyed by birds, while the stems can be used for nesting material. Northern bobwhite are known to nest in it.
