Senecio aureus / Packera aurea (golden ragwort)

golden ragwort (1 quart)

Golden ragwort lights up the arboretum's Parking Lot Alive! gardens and Blockston Branch floodplain each spring. This plant is a spring-blooming perennial whose deep green basal leaves are mostly evergreen. It grows best in full sun to part shade in moist to wet soils. It is very aggressive, so it is best in an area where it can be allowed to naturalize.

Golden ragwort is native to eastern North America. It is found in damp and swampy places in woodlands, meadows, along gravel banks and streambeds. The cinnabar moth feeds mostly on ragworts.
