Quercus phellos (willow oak)

willow oak (3gallon)

The willow oak is a medium-sized deciduous oak growing to 65–100' tall. It is distinguished from other oaks by its narrow leaves, which resemble willow leaves. Willow oak is a popular tree for horticultural planting because of its rapid growth, hardiness, and ability to withstand both sun and shade. Willow oaks grow moderately fast, gaining up to two feet a year. They tend to be conic to oblong when young, rounding out and gaining girth at maturity of 50 years or more. Willow oak has beautiful fall color and unique narrow leaves. It prefers moist/wet bottomlands and flatwoods.

Willow oak is most common in the American South and eastern states. It is found most often on lowland floodplains, often along streams. Like other oaks, it is valued by wildlife. Oaks are the most valuable trees you can plant for hosting butterflies and moths and in turn feeding birds. On Maryland DNR's Recommended Tree List.
