Quercus coccinea (scarlet oak)

Scarlet oak is a medium to large deciduous tree with a rounded, open habit. It eventually matures to 18–24' tall, with a maximum height of 100'. It grows fast and matures relatively early. Often grown for shade or ornamental pruposes. Prefers dry, acidic, sandy soils, and tolerates drought. Needs full exposure to sunlight for best growth. Leaves are deeply cut with bristle-tipped, pointed lobes. Foliage is a glossy green in summer turning to a beautiful scarlet in fall. Fruit is an acorn. Subject to defoliating insects. 

Scarlet oak is primarily found in central and eastern U.S. Quite common in Maryland's piedmont and mountain areas but also occurs on the coastal plain. Oaks are the most valuable trees you can plant for hosting butterflies and moths and in turn feeding birds. Many small- to medium-sized birds as well as squirrels and other small mammals choose scarlet oak for shelter. Its acorns are eaten by by animals, including woodpeckers and jays, small mammals and deer.
