Pycnanthemum virginianum (Virginia mountain mint)
1 Quart
Virginia mountain mint is a sturdy, branched, herbaceous perennial that grows 2–3' tall and features narrow, toothless, tapering leaves and profuse, somewhat flat-topped, terminal clusters of small, white, 2-lipped flowers which bloom in mid to late summer. Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun. All parts of the plant have a strong, mint-like aroma when crushed. Lovely in the perennial border or rain garden.
Virginia mountain mint is native to the eastern U.S. and eastern Canada. It is found in open shrub meadows and along roadsides, where it grows in dry to moist sandy loam. The flowers attract many insects, including honeybees, cuckoo bees, sweat bees, thread-waisted wasps, potter wasps, tachnid flies, wedge-shaped beetles, and pearl crescent butterflies.
