'Kobold' is a smaller, more compact and upright variety of the straight species. It produces vibrant purple flowering spikes beginning at the top of the spike and blooming down the plant. Blooming in July and August, blazing star grows to about 2 feet tall and spreads only about a foot. Plant this in full sun, with medium moisture. It attracts birds, butterflies, and hummingbirds, and is relatively drough tolerant.

Dense blazing star is native to eastern North America, where it grows in moist prairies and sedge meadows. Considered highly rare in Maryland. Attracts pollinators and beneficial insects. Host plant for various moth species. Groundhogs, rabbits, and voles eat the plants. Considered deer resistant.
