Iris versicolor 'Purple Flame' (northern blue flag iris)

2 Gallon

'Purple Flame' is a cultivar of blue flag iris that was introduced in 2020 by Mt. Cuba Center. Its most outstanding ornamental feature is the striking eggplant-purple new foliage that emerges from the ground in early spring. As the weather warms, the bold purple leaves start to fade, eventually turning back to tones of green more typical of the species. In late spring to early summer, dark stems produce dark purple flowers. It will get 2–3' tall and wide. Just like the straight species, thrives in moist and wet areas in full to part sun. This cultivar was originally discovered at Mt. Cuba Center along the edge of a pond.

Northern blue flag is native to the eastern U.S. and eastern Canada. It is common in sedge meadows, marshes, and along streambanks and shores. Attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and other birds.
