The Impact and History of Lawns - June 22

Saturday, June 22
1–2:30 p.m.

In 2023 and 2024, Adkins Arboretum was awarded funding by the Chesapeake Bay Trust (CBT) to provide outreach and education to local HOAs in support of environmentally-friendly landscaping practices. This speaker series was developed as part of the Naturally Better Landscaping project in partnership with ShoreRivers and Queen Anne’s County officials and is free for HOA members thanks to CBT funding and open to the general public. All presentations will be held at the Arboretum unless otherwise noted.

Paula Becker, Outreach Ecologist for MD DNR, will explore the history of lawns in the US and globally, with insights into societal pressure, values, county ordinances, and economics. She’ll also discuss how and why we should change our feelings about lawns to reflect a more nuanced understanding of nature and our place in it. Tips on how to find native plant resources and lawn care will be part of the discussion. Join us after the program for a walking tour of the Arboretum’s woodland paths.

Advance registration is required for all programs and events. This helps with planning and lets us contact you if programs are canceled. Many of our instructors are from out of town, and programs with insufficient enrollment may be canceled several days in advance.

**Note: You will be asked upon checkout to create an account. This is optional and is not required to register.**
