Ilex verticillata 'Winter Red' (winterberry, female)

'Winter Red' is a female cultivar of winterberry holly rowing 6–8' tall by the same wide. Winterberries in general are a slow-growing deciduous shrub species but easily grown in average, acidic, medium to wet soils in full sun to part shade. Adaptable to both light and heavy soils, but prefers moist, acidic, organic loams. Good tolerance for poorly drained soils including wet boggy or swampy condition. Has orange-red berries. Pollinated by 'Apollo' or 'Southern Gentlemen.' Note: All Ilex species are somewhat toxic if ingested; sensitivity varies. 

Common winterberry holly is native to eastern North America. It occurs particularly in wetland habitats, but also on dry sand dunes and grasslands. Provides cover and nesting sites. Fruits attract birds; nectar attracts insects. Host plant for various moth species and butterflies including Henry's Elfin butterfly. Maryland DNR lists as deer-resistant.
