University of Maryland Extension Recommended Native Shrub
Maryland DNR Deer-Resistant Plant
'Jim Dandy' is an earlier blooming dwarf, male cultivar of common winterberry holly. Winterberry is one of a number of hollies which are deciduous, losing their leaves in Fall. Jim Dandy grows to about 6' tall and wide. Its small white flowers bloom in June and July, and therefore it is recommended for pollination with 'Red Sprite' and 'Maryland Beauty'. It grows best in full sun to part shade in medium to wet conditions. One 'Jim Dandy' can pollinate up to 10 female plants. Male plants do not produce fruit. All Ilex species are somewhat toxic if ingested; sensitivity varies.
Common winterberry holly is native to eastern North America. It occurs particularly in wetland habitats, but also on dry sand dunes and grasslands. Provides cover and nesting sites. Fruits attract birds; nectar attracts insects. Host plant for various moth species and butterflies including Henry's Elfin butterfly.
