Ilex glabra 'Compacta'

Inkberry (3 gallon)

The 'Compacta' cultivar of inkberry holly grows 3–4' high and thrives in moist to wet soils. This evergreen shrub should be planted in full sun to part shade. 'Compacta' is a female and needs a male to produce the black berries. Since male cultivars are not readily available, choose a straight species inkberry to have a chance of obtaining a male that can pollinate the female. Note: All Ilex species are somewhat toxic if ingested; sensitivity varies.

Inkberry is native to the coastal plain of eastern North America. It is most commonly found in sandy woods and the peripheries of swamps and bogs. This species attracts honey bees and birds. Evergreen foliage provides protection for birds. Maryland DNR lists inkberry as deer-resistant. Inkberry holly is on the University of Maryland Extension's list of recommended native shrubs.
