Heliopsis helianthoides (ox eye sunflower)

ox eye sunflower (1 gallon)

Ox-eye sunflower, also known as smooth oxeye and false sunflower, is a popular, undemanding garden plant for moist, fertile soil in full sun. This rhizomatous perennial has yellow sunflower-like flowers that last from midsummer to early autumn. Unlike sunflowers, the rays on its flower heads persist whereas the rays of sunflowers wither and fall away. Grows to 3–5'. Give it full sun. It is easily grown in dry sites and is a good choice for clay soil. Will self-sow.

Ox-eye sunflower is native to eastern and central North America. In the wild, it is found in wooded areas and tallgrass prairie, and sometimes along roadsides. Attracts hummingbirds. Supports conservation biological control by attracting insects that prey upon insect pests. Host plant for the clearwing moth.
