Helenium autumnale (yellow sneezeweed)

yellow sneezeweed (quart)

Yellow sneezeweed is a popular garden perennial because of its beautiful yellow blooms in August, September, and October that look like the sun. Contrary to its common name, this plant will not make you sneeze. The name refers to historical use of the dried flowers and leaves as snuff. Sneezeweed grows to about 3–5' tall and spreads about 3'. It thrives in full sun in areas with medium to wet soil moisture. A great selection for bright color in your rain garden, it tolerates deer, clay, and wet soil. It does not do well in dry soil, so make sure it has water.

Yellow sneezeweed is widespread across much of the U.S. and Canada, growing in moist, open areas along streams and ponds as well as wet meadows. Its flowers attract pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and wasps.
