Gillenia trifoliata (Porteranthus trifoliatus) brings an informal, ethereal quality to the garden with its delicate winds of small white flowers floating on a late spring breeze. This herbaceous perennial has a showy star-like white flower in May, June, and July. It grows to 2–3' tall. Does well in full sun to part shade in moist soil, but prefers a little shade in the hottest part of the day. It can be difficult to establish, but once established it can thrive. It offers attractive fall color. A wonderful plant in mass plantings or in the border with other natives.

Bowman's root is native to eastern North America. In Maryland, it occurs mainly in rich woods of the western mountains.
