Elymus viginicus (Virginia wild rye)
Virginia wild rye (quart)
Virginia Wild Rye is a cool-season, clumping perennial grass that grows 2-4' tall. This grass grows in a full range of sunny to shady conditions, and while it prefers organic-rich soils, it can tolerate most soil conditions. It is good for erosion control and woodland restorations, and also is resistant to deer. An added value is that it serves as a host plant to several butterflies and moths. The attractive, wheat-like seed heads are enjoyed by birds, however can cause risk to pets and therefore are NOT recommended if you have pets that may frequent where these would be planted.
