Corylus americana (American hazelnut)

American hazelnut (2 gallon, 12-18" tall)

The American hazelnut or filbert is a deciduous multi-stemmed shrub that works best in informal, naturalized areas. It grows 10–15' tall and 8–12' wide. It spreads by sending up suckers from underground rhizomes. It blooms in very early to mid-Spring, producing male catkins and clusters of tiny female flowers enclosed in buds. It has a nice fall color and edible fruit for both humans and animals. Tolerates full to part sun and well-drained soils. Often cultivated as an ornamental plant for native plant gardens and in wildlife gardens to attract and keep fauna in an area.

The American hazelnut or filbert is native to Maryland and much of the rest of eastern North America. American hazelnut grows in or forms thickets, often in moist soil. It occurs often along streams. It is not common on the coastal plain. Host plant to various moth species and the leaf beatle. Squirrels and other wildlife are very fond of the nuts.
