Chamaelirium luteum (fairy wand)

fairy wand (quart)

Fairy wand is a great wildflower for the shade, blooming in late spring or early summer with an 18–24" spike of white flowers. Grows in sun to shade and rich soil. Male plants grow up to 2.5' tall, but female plants may grow as tall as 4'. Grows in organically rich, moist, acidic, well-drained soils in part shade to full shade. Protect this rare plant by placing flat rocks around its base to discourage squirrels and chipmunks from digging. Toxic to humans if consumed in large quantities.

Fairy wand is native to moist, acidic soils in shaded areas of meadows, woods, and thickets in eastern North America. Rare in many parts of its original geographic range. The wand-like blooms attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
