Baptisia tinctoria (yellow wild indigo)
yellow wild indigo (1 gallon)
Yellow wild indigo is an upright, smooth, shrubby perennial which typically grows 2–3' tall. It features small, bright yellow to cream, pea-like flowers in sparsely-flowered clusters on stems extending above the clover-like, gray-green leaves. It blooms in late spring to early summer. Flowers give way to small seed pods which turn black when ripe and have some ornamental interest. It is easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Not as showy as other baptisias; best in naturalistic garden design, in pollinator gardens, or for naturalization in meadows. Give it full sun to part shade. Tolerates drought and poor soils. Baptisia have a deep and extensive root systems and should not be disturbed once established. Deer and rabbit resistent.
Yellow wild indigo is native to eastern North America. It prefers dry meadow and open woodland environments. The leaves are eaten by caterpillars such as the lo moth.
